Grafting

Chris Xepapas

At Heritage bonsai Tasmania Shofu-en, a crucial part of developing bonsai is grafting. Quite often there is no branch where you need it so we simply graft one on.

Two years on and this Japanese maple is starting to take shape but still needs some time to develop.

My first live feed was with this tree, here is the link

Redevelopment of old maples

Chris Xepapas

At Heritage bonsai Tasmania Shofu-en, one of our less known services is the redevelopment of old maples. This can take from two to five years depending on the severity of what's needed. Airlayering new root systems, root grafting, branch grafting, branch repositioning and changing the foliage type are to name a few things.

This old dissectum has been completely grafted and is well on the way to becoming a nice bonsai.

Mame and Shohin

Chris Xepapas

There will be a big increase in production of mame and shohin bonsai in the coming years at Heritage bonsai Tasmania Shofu-en. Though harder to keep alive, these size bonsai are more suitable for people who live in confined space like units or apartments.

Black pine seedlings

Chris Xepapas

I have recently propagated some Japanese black pine seedlings from a Nishiki variety or corky bark.

It will be interesting to see if the seedlings develop into the same as the parent plant, or come out as standard black pine , or even something in between? I’ll keep you posted.
